10 years

Jonathan and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary on the 9th of June.  We can still remember our long engagement of 3 1/2 years back in the 90s and feeling like our wedding day couldn't come soon enough!

This year, our anniversary fell on Patch Night and, well, neither one of us wanted to miss out on that!  We each did our respective celebrating that night...

The awesome ladies of the 433rd.

Group pic on the big red party bus!

...and left early the next morning for a weekend in San Francisco!  Grammy came into town to watch the girls for patch night as well as our weekend. Granka came to join a couple of days later (and got Ava's puking virus, but that's another story).

Jonathan surprised me with a limo pick up at the airport.  We were walking to baggage claim and I was people watching like I normally do and noticed a man in a tuxedo and said out loud "that paper has your name on it".  Jonathan said "why yes it does!" and we left the airport in style.

We arrived at the Palace Hotel and were escorted to our Market St. view room, and a few moments later, one of my favorites arrived at our door!

YUM!
We put on our walking shoes (well I did...Jonathan's flip flops are his walking shoes, and his yard work shoes and his snow shoes) and headed out to see the town.  We ended up walking a LOT and a few hours into it, I wasn't feeling so hot.  We were a few miles from our hotel and I wasn't going to be able to make it back on foot.  We flagged down a pedi-cab and he biked us back to our hotel.  It was the best $20 I had spent all day.  That night, I also came down with a wonderful puking bug but felt a lot better the next morning.

Like any other SF tourist, we purchased a pass for a few days of public transportation and hopped on a trolley!

After waiting in a looong line for almost an hour, we had great seats on the trolley we wanted (they go to different destinations).

We were driven up GIGANTIC hills and saw some pretty cool buildings.

The buildings there are stacked right on top of each other.

View of Alcatraz Island from Lombard St.

Us at Lombard Street...with a lot of other SF tourists.  It was hard to get a shot of this very windy street, so here is just us.

After the trolley made it to its destination, we had to disembark and decided to give it a whirl on the F line...a bus that runs from Fisherman's Wharf (all the shops and food along the bay) back to Market St., (which is where our hotel was located).  But first we walked out onto a pier and got some more pictures of course.

Here is Ghirardelli Square-which supplied me with my first meal of the day since being sick...a delicious peanut butter and chocolate ice cream sundae.

It was slightly windy and you can see part of the Golden Gate bridge behind us.  Some nice ladies came up and offered to take our picture when they saw us holding our big camera to take pictures of ourselves.  We always oblige people who offer, but they can never take a good photo.  They seem to always focus on the wrong thing!  We should just start saying no!  But instead, we just delete it when they walk away.

The colorful F line buses.  We found out that the public transportation there was a lot like public health care...not everyone has to pay for it but they used it anyway!

The next day we toured Alcatraz Island, which we learned was more than just a prison at one point (was used in war, inhabited by Indians for 19 months and is now a safe haven for birds and plants), but we didn't care about any of that...we wanted to hear about the criminals and their lives there.

 Showers...I can only imagine...

 Broken down staircase.

 Come on in...

 GG Bridge

Us again...just say no to strangers!

Old Buildings.  We found out that families of the officers that worked on Alcatraz actually lived on the island as well.  Kids were boated across the 1 1/4 mile stretch of water to attend school in the city.

 Creepy little door.

Another view of the bridge from the island.

That evening we met up with Jonathan's cousin Tony and his fiancee Gwen who live in Walnut Grove, which is east of Oakland.  We took the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) under the bay and popped out at a transit station where they picked us up and we went to see their home and then off to dinner.  It was our first time on any "subway" of any kind, but we didn't take any pictures.  We felt too dorky to do that.

This town is definitely more liberal than we are used to, and there was a lot of homeless people begging for money, beer and even weed!  We smelled marijuana on numerous occasions.  We were even approached by people representing Planned Parenthood (no less than 6 times) asking if we supported them.  The ACLU was also walking around and people were picketing all sorts of things...so CVS being non union, war, etc.  There were street performers of all kinds and even at night when we would go to bed, we could hear the guy on the street playing his saxophone for money.  That was actually kind of nice to hear!

Old Lady

My 32nd birthday was a few weeks ago.  It fell on a Sunday which meant it was to be a busy day with church and bible study at our home as well as Kylie's very first piano recital after only 2 months of lessons.  We woke up late, but that left plenty of time in the morning for breakfast and presents for moi!  We ran through the day, and I have to say my favorite part was Kylie's recital.  I was SOOO nervous for her, but she did awesome!

 What a beautiful instrument!

After bible study, we went to dinner at a local Thai restaurant then came home to my very own home made mud pie by my awesome hubby.  He made it all from scratch...the crust all the way to the whipped cream!  It took 2 days to make since he had to do it in stages to let each layer harden in the freezer.

 Juliet blew out my candle!

I love my family!

Happy 7th Birthday Kylie!

Last Friday the 13th, Kylie turned 7 years old!

My parents and Jonathan's mom were able to come into town to celebrate.  Jonathan's dad had to work.  :(  Jonathan took the day off and we did some work to get ready for her party!

Our theme was Wizard of Oz, so for breakfast, she got "Monkey Bread"-get it, the flying monkeys?!

To keep the present commotion down come party time, she opened her gifts from Nama and Bopa.  Nama sewed her a dress, and crocheted her a swimsuit cover up and a matching bag to hold her pool supplies...including a new towel.

We took everyone to Red Robin for lunch, but didn't get any pictures.

Her friends arrived in the afternoon.  This was our first organized kid party with just a few friends and I told all the moms they could drop their kids off and go do whatever they wanted for the next couple of hours.  In the past, we've had big parties with kids and parents, and as fun as that is, this was WAY more intimate and less overwhelming - and I thought a lot more fun for Kylie (and me!).

When the kids arrived, they did a maze to help Toto find his bone.

The table scape.  The kids had Glinda's PB&J wands, apples with dip (remember the mean apple trees?), rainbow gold fish and animal crackers (Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!)

This was definitely the hit-rainbow fruit kabobs!

Of course we had to play Twister...get it?  "Its a twister!"

The cake made by daddy.  He was very proud of his work!

When the kids arrived, they saw that our doorbell didn't work, and that our house landed on the wicked witch!  We also had the cyclone song playing by the front door.  Near our drive way, "Munchkin Land" was playing out the window.  Sorry neighbors-hope it wasn't annoying!

Playing "Pin the Heart on the Tin Man".  Jonathan also made the tin man.

Playing Oz memory.  Once it got going, they were excited to find pairs and had a hard time keeping quiet when they knew where a match was but it wasn't their turn to pick.  They all got very excited for each other and there were no poor sports.  Everyone got at least one match too.

Onto Oz bingo.  This was super fun too.  It was so cute to see the bigger kids help out the little kids find words.

 My pretty baby.

All 8 kids squeezed on our kid table-it really DOES hold 8 kids!

K cups

Of course they had to run off all that sugar energy.

Kylie gave all her friends big hugs after she opened their gifts.

Grammy and Grandka gave her an art table.  I tell you what-we've had this thing for less than a week and it is AWESOME!!!  They LOVE it!

Cake time!

 Everyone singing.

Micaela takes piano lessons with the same teacher as Kylie.  She played part of "Heart & Soul" as well as "Happy Birthday" for Kylie.

Bopa and Nama.

 Both grandmas.

Kylie with us.  She's so BIG!!!

Later that night she opened her presents from Uncle Jeffery. He always has great thought to his gifts, and I think most all of them have been ordered online while he's been deployed overseas.  He got Kylie "Chose Your Own Adventure" books-which is a joke on Jonathan too because he loved these growing up.  He also got her Monopoly Jr., which in the Kassebaum family, you DO NOT play Monopoly with the boys.  I learned that mistake many years ago.  They are brutal and ruthless!  He also got her an interactive world map-very cool!

Happy Birthday to my beautiful, smart, silly, reserved yet adventurous, helpful, inquisitive, sensitive, brave and sassy daughter.  I love you Kylie!!

Daddy date-Ava

This last Friday it was Ava's turn to go out on a date with daddy.  She picked out a sparkly pink dress and white strappy shoes as her ensemble for the evening.  They went out for Thai food, and turns out Ava really liked pad thai!  Then daddy had round two of "Rio".

I just noticed Jonathan wore the same thing for his date!  Maybe I should have gotten him something new.

While Ava and daddy were out, we played make-up!  Kylie did some good work us Juliet and I.

Juliet's Ballet Recital

Juliet finished up her ballet class this week with a recital at an assisted living home in town.  For the past 4 months, our Tuesday afternoon has consisted of us going to the home of a home schooled girl who is a senior in high school, and one way she raised some money for bible college was to teach ballet to little girls.  This was a great (and inexpensive) introduction to an activity for Juliet and she really loved it.

Waiting to start! She was very exited and even happier daddy took a bit of time off work to come watch her dance.

Sorry the pix are a little fuzzy.  We were standing really far away and the lighting wasn't all that great.

Being goofy before starting. She kept looking over at us and waving and smiling.

Showing off her best dance moves.

She had a smile on her face the whole time.  Not an ounce of nervousness!

I too had a smile on my face the whole time and was almost brought to tears watching my cuteness dance her little heart out!

Daddy date-Kylie

A couple nights ago, Jonathan took Kylie on a date.  After getting dolled up in her new dress and heels, she was properly escorted to dinner at Brio and a movie to see Rio.

Ava is going this upcoming Friday, and Juliet knows she has to wait until she's a bit older.
